Windsor Police to Obtain License Plate Reader Through Regional Effort
Over the last twenty years, the North Central Regional Municipalities have shared resources as we have worked together. In addition to personnel, we have shared supplies and vehicles. Each of the towns have donated vehicles and maintained them for the regional operation. The Region just received grant funding from the state for purchasing a three camera license plate reader (LPR) which is placed on a police cruiser for checking all registration plates that are passed by.
The three cameras are able to view cars going in both directions by the police car, as well as cars parked alongside the road or parking lot. The cameras then send the plate numbers through a wireless connection into the statewide computer system, which then sends back a message to the cruiser's laptop if the registration is expired or if the vehicle is stolen, etc.
In addition to the LPR system from the state, the North Central region is funding the purchase of a new white police cruiser that will perform this function. Windsor is coordinating the purchase, implementation, and maintenance of the vehicle and equipment, which will help us to ensure that it is performing well and that we will have primary usage of it, although we will be sharing it with a few other towns as well.
Grinding of Tree Debris from Storm Alfred
The grinding of approximately 31,000 cubic yards of tree waste caused by the October snowstorm is began today at the temporary storage site owned by the Cicero Family behind the Sunoco station off of Bloomfield Avenue. This grinding of the debris is being done by C & C Landclearing, a Windsor-based firm. C & C was selected from a competitive bid process. Their price for grinding, hauling away, and disposing of the wood chips is $70,000, and is a very competitive price. They anticipate needing about 2 weeks to complete this work. 75% FEMA reimbursement of the contract amount is expected. I wish to thank Joe Cicero and the Cicero Family for offering to allow the town to temporarily use their property for this effort.
Later in the spring we expect to grind the storm debris delivered to the landfill. That work also will be bid competitively.
Town Clerk's Office Celebrates Golden Anniversary
The Windsor Town Clerk's Office is celebrating 50 years of offering free marriage licenses on Valentine's Day. This tradition was started by Windsor Town Clerk George Tudan in 1962. Because this is a special year, the clerk's office is trying to locate couples who received a free marriage license over these past years. A reunion celebration for past lovebirds with refreshments and a drawing for a gift basket filled with items from our generous Windsor merchants will be held on February 14th. A Justice of the Peace will be on hand for vow renewals if requested.
If you are one of the couples, or know of a couple that has received a free marriage license on any Valentine's Day over the past 50 years in the Windsor Town Clerk's office, please contact the office at 860-285-1902.

Windsor Police Officer to be Honored by Red Cross
Windsor Police Officer Sue Bowman will be recognized by the American Red Cross in March at their 2012 Community Heroes Breakfast. Officer Bowman has been with our force for more than 15 years.
In addition to volunteering for community events such as Memorial Day, reading in Windsor Schools and being a familiar face at many Windsor Social Services and senior events, Officer Bowman has dedicated one day a week for the past ten years volunteering at a local soup kitchen. She regularly supports other organizations such as the Shriner's Hospital, the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), Special Olympics and walks against breast cancer to name just a few.
Congratulations to Officer Sue Bowman on the receipt of this recognition, but more importantly the difference she continues to make in the community each day.
