Sustainable CT
Sustainable CT was created by towns, for towns as a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. Municipal leaders and residents from across the state, the Connecticut Conference of Municipalities, and people from key agencies, non-profits, and businesses partnered to develop the program in 2016 and 2017.
Objective
To foster inclusive, resilient, and vibrant Connecticut municipalities that provide opportunities for all to thrive by: providing a menu of sustainability actions that build local economies, support equity, and respect the finite capacity of the environment; offering technical assistance to help advance sustainability initiatives; and recognizing and certifying municipalities for their achievements.
Efforts Here In Windsor
- The Town of Windsor joined as a participant community in 2021. Sustainability efforts have been factored into future developments to become climate leaders.
Highlights
- Educate and engage your community in watershed education.
- Protect pollinators by creating pollinator gardens with plants native to Connecticut, enacting policies to protect pollinators and enhance their habitat, promoting native species planting, and educating the public on the importance of pollinator-friendly habitats in your municipality.
- Plan for and implement projects to protect and enhance natural resources and habitats.
- Support and implement projects that create or enhance collaboration between artists, the community, and your municipality.
- Commit to, plan for, and implement projects that provide inclusive and safer mobility and access for all roadway users–including pedestrians, bicyclists, transit users, and motor vehicles–regardless of age, ability, income, or ethnicity.
- Manage your municipal energy consumption with the goals of efficiency, economy, environmental responsibility, and resiliency. Enable cooperative actions such as establishing microgrids and broad-scale adoption of renewable energy. Include the residential and business sectors.
What you can do…
- Residents are encouraged to find better ways to live sustainable lives. The Town of Windsor has recognized the importance of everyone contributing to the improvement and stewardship of the environment.
- Recycle CT has become an important resource for teaching sustainable practices to the residents of the Connecticut!
- The Recycle CT Foundation is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to promote the importance of managing materials more sustainably through waste reduction, reuse, recycling, and composting.
- We encourage people, government entities, businesses, schools, and organizations to adopt these practices as part of their everyday lives or operations. Recycle CT provides statewide promotion of recycling; creates educational materials available for printing that can be co-branded by municipalities, haulers and others; conducts research, including a recent recycling economic information study; and offers grant programs.
