Starting the week of March 12, 2017 the MDC will begin using Everbridge, a mass notification system, to alert citizens of water main breaks and scheduled water shut downs. This is the same system already used by several MDC service area towns and the State of Connecticut for emergency alerts. The MDC also plans to send a follow up message once the water service is restored and provide instruction on what do to if the customer notices discoloration in their water. The use of Everbridge in this manner will benefit residents by sharing critical information regarding their water service.
Initially, the MDC’s Everbridge system will use white and yellow page phone numbers within a designated service area as customer contact information. Due to the fact that our main point of contact will be landline telephone numbers, we will notify citizens only between the hours of 6 AM and 9 PM. As is current practice, MDC staff will continue to attempt to notify affected customers via a door knock, together with Everbridge technology enhancing communication capabilities.
The MDC also has a portal where individuals can sign up to receive Everbridge notification messages via cell, text or email. In the upcoming months, the MDC will market its Everbridge portal to leverage more contact information and give customers more choices regarding their notification. The MDC requests that our town partners add the MDC Everbridge link to your webpage or newsfeeds to provide customers with additional avenues to take advantage of the Everbridge notification service. Further outreach will include a press release, eblast, Facebook, Twitter, and notification on bills and inserts.
