Windsor Freedom Trail Events/Programs
The 2023–2024 Windsor Freedom Trail activities included the Windsor Freedom Trail Run on September 16, 2023, the Windsor Freedom Trail Walking Tour on September 23, 2023, and the Black Inventions Exhibit on February 1-2, 2024, in celebration of Black History Month. These events attracted visitors from across New England, providing participants with a deeper understanding of African American contributions, achievements, and life stories.
The Black Inventions Exhibit, a collaboration event, was particularly well-received, exceeding expectations and engaging attendees of all ages. This event highlighted numerous inventions by African Americans, many of which are still in use today, and was a significant educational opportunity for approximately 700 middle school students. Dr. Terrell Hill, Windsor Superintendent of Schools, remarked that the exhibit left an indelible impact on the community, unifying diverse audiences and fostering appreciation for the legacy of Black excellence.
For 28 years, the Windsor Freedom Trail Committee has offered educational programs highlighting African American history and the journey towards freedom. These efforts contribute significantly to Windsor’s cultural tourism, drawing visitors from across the country to learn about historical African American experiences from an authentic perspective. The Community & Neighborhood Enhancement Grant ARF funds supported these 2023-2024 events, and the Committee looks forward to continuing to share these important stories for years to come.
