Preparedness

The preparedness stage is where you will build your emergency plan. Your family should have their own individual plan on what will be done in different types of emergencies. Simply having a plan isn’t enough, your plan will also need to be practiced so you can see what areas need to be improved upon.

Part of proper planning includes preparing your emergency kit. You should have a kit both in your home, and in your car so that you have emergency supplies wherever you are. Ready-made kits can be purchased, or you can put together your own.

In addition to your emergency kit, you should also keep the following items in your car:

  • jumper cables
  • a blanket
  • ice scraper
  • map
  • car adapter for your cell phone
  • cat litter or sand
  • reflective triangle or flares
