Windsor History Inclusion Project

The Windsor History Inclusion project updates the Society’s permanent exhibit to address the long-standing omission of the history and stories of Windsor’s residents of color. This initiative incorporates new exhibit panels featuring information, images, and stories of Windsor’s Black residents throughout its 400-year history.

The project includes two main parts. The first, “Bridges and Belonging,” opened in February 2024, and the second, “People of Windsor,” is set to open in July 2024. Town funds have supported both parts of the exhibit. All materials for “People of Windsor” are developed and currently being printed, with installation planned for June/July 2024.

The Windsor History Inclusion project benefits the museum’s approximately 3,000 annual visitors, including families and local school children. Special focus has been placed on the experience of Black visitors, and the town’s many residents of color, especially Black residents, who may now come to the museum and, for the first time, see history and stories of people like themselves here. Over 80 people attended the opening of “Bridges and Belonging,” and initial evaluations show positive results, with many visitors reporting they have learned about Windsor’s Black history through the new exhibit. One visitor remarked, “Great new exhibits that are informative and inclusive.” The “People of Windsor” portion is scheduled to open on July 10, 2024.
