Weather Emergencies Information

As winter weather settles in it's important to keep an eye on the weather and to be prepared for storms before they occur. Here are a few tips and links to keep you and your home safe this winter.

Before every storm, you should be prepared to stay safe at home during and immediately after the storm. This means:

  • Having enough food (that can be prepared without power) and water on hand for everyone in your home for a few days. And don't forget your pet
  • Having an adequate supply of any medication or oxygen that you or a family member may need
  • Having a plan in place in case of a power outage if you or a family member relies on medical equipment that runs on electricity. Here are some safety tips to remember if you plan on using a generator.
  • If you have concerns about your ability to stay safe in your home during a storm dial 2-1-1 or visit 211ct.org

If you have any problems with your utilities before or during a storm please contact your utility provider directly.

  • Electricity – Dial 9-1-1 if you see power lines down in your area.  If you just experience an outage go to Eversources website  Eversource.com  to report it. If your cell number is listed for your account Eversource will send text updates when power is out and when it is expected to come back.
  • Water – Go to the MDC's website themdc.org for more information about what to do with a water emergency. There are also helpful tips on their page to prevent your pipes from freezing.  If your basement floods call a local plumber to assist you to pump it out
  • Gas – Dial 9-1-1 if you smell gas.  If you experience a non-emergency issue with your gas to your provider's website for more information. Here are links to Eversource and CNG

  • Please remember to keep any fire hydrants on your property cleared of snow. 36 inches all the way around gives your volunteer firefighters enough room to work.
  • Please remember to clear your sidewalks of snow and ice promptly
    • According to the town ordinance, the owner of any premises adjoining and fronting upon any public sidewalk or bike path should clear a minimum of a 4-foot wide path within 12 hours following a snowstorm. If a snowstorm occurs during the night, the ordinance calls for the snow to be removed with 12 hours of sunrise.

Please remember for everyone's safety, there is no parking on Windsor streets between 1:00 AM and 6:00 AM from November 15th through April 15th.  Also, there is no parking on any street during a snow or ice storm that has been in progress for one hour or more.
